FDA's September psychedelic hearing: what it covered
2026-10-19 ยท 3 min read
The FDA's September 2026 psychedelic hearing notice asked how future supervised care might work: who would provide it, how patients would be protected and what data should be collected. Its public-comment window has closed. A separate consultation on ibogaine research is still open as of 19 October.
What the September notice covered
The hearing notice grouped its questions around provider training, patient safety, access and data collection. Those are practical questions about delivering and studying care, including informed consent, follow-up, workforce capacity and reporting adverse events.
The notice also set clear limits. It excluded decisions about a particular product's safety or effectiveness, drug scheduling, and legalization or decriminalization. A public hearing about future care is not a product approval or a change in possession law.
The FDA event page listed the hearing for 14 September, from 12:30 to 4:30 p.m. Eastern Time, and written comments until 5 October. It links to the agenda and commenter list. Those dates have passed, so its old registration and live-viewing instructions are no longer an invitation to attend.
A different consultation is open now
On 5 October, the FDA announced a request for information on ibogaine research. This asks for input on early-phase trial design, including participant eligibility, safety monitoring and stopping rules.
Its separate public notice, docket FDA-2026-N-10429, sets a comment deadline of 20 November 2026. Electronic submissions close at 11:59 p.m. Eastern Time that day. It also describes serious safety concerns, including potentially life-threatening heart-rhythm problems. This is a research consultation, not an offer of treatment or a trial-enrolment page.
Researchers, clinicians and other interested readers can use that notice to check the questions and current submission instructions. Comments and attachments may be public, so read its privacy instructions before including personal information.
Reading the next announcement
When following psychedelic research news, check what the document actually does. A hearing gathers views; a study record describes a trial; published results report findings. For help with that last distinction, read our guide to trial listings and study results.
For September's hearing materials, start with the FDA event page. For the current ibogaine consultation, use the separate November-deadline notice. They have different purposes, dates and dockets.
